Some pregnant women prescribed potentially dangerous drugs during pregnancy
Nearly half of pregnant women who received medications other than vitamins may be made to take drugs that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified as non-humans have shown evidence of safety for use during pregnancy or the evidence may harm a fetus, according to a new study by HHS Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) funded. The article was published in the August 2004 issue of American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The study, the largest ever to examine the use of prescription drugs among pregnant women was conducted by researchers at AHRQ HMO Research Network Center for Education and Research on Therapeutics (CERT).The CERT program is a national initiative to raise awareness about the benefits and risks of new, existing, or combined uses of
therapeutics and devices.The researchers examined data from eight health care facilities in different geographical areas. They evaluated the use of drugs to 152,531 women who have a child in a hospital, first delivered in January 1996 to December 31 December 2000, based on the risk classification system of drugs during pregnancy DFA. The study did not examine the use of non-prescription drugs or medicines prescribed in hospitals.
